A NEW tram in our twin city in Hungary has been named ‘Cambridge’ to mark the enduring links between the two cities.
The former Mayor of Cambridge, Cllr Jeremy Benstead, attended the annual Bridge Fair in Szeged, Hungary, at which the 30th anniversary of Szeged and Cambridge being twinned was celebrated.
The occasion was marked by the unveiling of a new municipal tram in the Hungarian city, which the people of Szeged decided should be named ‘Cambridge’ as a symbol of the two cities’ long-lasting friendship.
The Bridge Fair is an annual event celebrating life in Szeged, which is the third biggest city in Hungary. Representatives from most of Szeged’s 12 twin cities attended the event.
Cambridge became twinned with Szeged in 1987, and is also twinned with Heidelberg in southern Germany.
