Force supports #itsnotok

CAMBRIDGESHIRE police are supporting the #itsnotok message as part of ‘Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence awareness week’.

In the past year 1774 sex offences were recorded by the force, including 1370 serious sex offences.

Det Insp Kate Anderson, from the force’s Rape Investigation Team, said: “The force fully supports the #itsnotok initiative and we think it is vital we have these events to raise awareness of the support available to people who have been subjected to sexual abuse and violence.

“Every day we hear from people who have taken that courageous step to report the offences against them.  Through our specialist officers and the brilliant support services available we are able to provide support to victims from their first contact through to criminal proceedings and beyond.

“We do not want anyone to suffer in silence and want to remind people that we are here and we will listen.

“Sexual abuse and violence is not ok and wherever possible we will take steps to prevent people from being subjected to these offences. And where offences have happened we will utilise every opportunity available to us to ensure those responsible and brought to justice.

“Year-on-year we have continued to see an increase in those people who have had the confidence to report the offences against them, but we still believe there are a number of survivors who do not report to the police.

“We are here to support people from all backgrounds and everyone is entitled to justice and support. There is also the opportunity to report anonymously and obtain support through our Sexual Assault Referral Centre if you are unsure what you want to do.”
