Flat fire in Cambridge

Two crews from Cambridge and one from Suffolk attended a fire in a flat in a multi-storey building in Hills Road.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the fire and returned to their stations by 9.41am.

Watch Commander Kev Andrews said the fire was caused by a plastic container catching fire on an unattended hob and spreading to several items in the close vicinity.

Crews did not need to evacuate the building, only the two neighbouring properties, as each flat is installed with a working smoke alarm.

WC Andrews said: “The fire was called in by a neighbour who heard the smoke alarm which is proof of how important it is for homes to have working smoking alarms installed in them.”

Top safety tips to avoid a kitchen fire include keeping electrical leads, tea towels and cloths away from the cooker and leaving the surfaces clear.
