“You saved my daughter’s life”: Cambridgeshire mum’s heartfelt thanks to medics

The family of a young girl seriously injured in a collision with a car in Peterborough have hailed the ambulance staff as life savers in an emotional reunion.

Elisha Hills-Steedman (10) and mum Michelle Steedman (40), from Bretton, were hit on Bourges Boulevard in February as they walked along the path.

Speaking about the incident, Michelle said: “We were, laughing, chatting, and holding hands when out of nowhere I felt something hit me from behind.”

Both Michelle and Elisha were injured in the collision, with Elisha suffering a fractured skull. Within four minutes of the 999 call, teams from the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) were on scene to provide expert care to both of them.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Adam Hern arrived with fellow EMTs Adrian Hobbs and Simon Bryan first. Minutes later Student Paramedic Heather De Gaunza, Senior Paramedic Nicholas Montgomery, and Duty Locality Officer Graham Wise arrived.

Adam said: “When we arrived on scene we knew we had to act fast; Simon and I had the look where we knew this was a serious situation.”

Both Michelle and Elisha were taken to Peterborough City Hospital where they made good recoveries and this week (Monday, 20th March) they were reunited with some of their life savers at Peterborough ambulance station.

Michelle said: “They saved my daughter’s life, we can’t thank them enough, and she is here today because of the fantastic service they provided.”

Dad Andy Steedman said: “The effort from them was fantastic. We wouldn’t have asked for anything better. I didn’t think Elisha would survive.”

Adam said: “We don’t always get to see what happened after we take patients in, so it’s nice to meet Elisha and her family again.”
