A14 road closures at Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich

Drivers using the A14 in Suffolk are being advised that the road will be closed overnight for several weeks from Monday 6 November while essential maintenance work is carried out.

Drivers using the A14 in Suffolk are being advised that the road will be closed overnight for several weeks from Monday 6 November while essential maintenance work is carried out.

Highways England will be completing work including resurfacing and repairing the dual carriageway, between junctions 40 (Barrow) and 43 (Bury St Edmunds central – A134), and between junctions 55 (Copdock Interchange – A12) and 62 (Port of Felixstowe), until Friday 19 January,

Work will take place on weeknights only, between 8pm and 6am, and will be suspended over the Christmas period (Saturday 23 December to Tuesday 2 January).

When the A14 is closed, there will be a clearly signed diversion in place. For the closures at Bury St Edmunds, drivers travelling eastbound will take the A1304 to join the A11, and then taking the A1101 back to re-join the A14 at junction 43. Drivers travelling westbound will follow this diversion in reverse. There will also be temporary traffic lights in place in both direction on the A14 while we are working.

At Ipswich, the work involves resurfacing the A14 between junctions 55 (Copdock Interchange – A12) and 58 (Levington), including across the Orwell Bridge, and repairing the road surface between junctions 58 and 62 (Port of Felixstowe).

This work will see the A14 closed:

  • Eastbound from junction 55 to 58 (Seven Hills interchange – A12) until Friday 1 December, with drivers taking the A1214, then the A1189, followed by the A1156 to re-join the A14 at junction 58;
  • Eastbound from junction 58 to 59 (Trimley St Martin) from Monday 4 to Friday 15 December, with drivers taking the A1156, then Felixstowe Road and High Road through Trimley St Martin, to re-join the A14 at junction 58 (with a weight limit through Trimley St Martin);
  • Eastbound from junction 59 to 60 (A154 roundabout – Walton) from Monday 11 to Friday 15 December with drivers taking High Road, then  A154 Garrison Lane, followed by A154 Candlet Road, to re-join the A14 at junction 60;
  • Eastbound from junction 58 to Croft House junction from Monday 18 to Friday 22 December, with drivers taking the A12, then to Newbourne Road, followed by A1093 Main Road and back to Croft House junction;
  • Eastbound from junction 60 to 62 from Tuesday 2 to Friday 19 January, with drivers taking the A154 Candlet Road, then to Garrison Lane and Langer Road, followed by Walton Avenue to re-join the A14 at junction 62 (with a weight limit through Felixstowe).

The work is part of a wider package of maintenance work Highways England is delivering across Essex and Suffolk, comprising 58 schemes worth £22m. It will also see work including resurfacing, safety improvements and environmental schemes on the A11, A12 and A120 too.
