Parliamentary general election on 8 June - Register to vote by 22 May

ON THURSDAY 8 June, elections will take place in Cambridge for Members of Parliament for the Cambridge constituency (in 13 city wards) and the South Cambridgeshire constituency (in Queen Edith’s ward).

The confirmed candidates for 8 June, in the Cambridge constituency are:

• Keith Alexander Garrett, Rebooting Democracy
• John Hayward, The Conservative Party
• Julian Leon Huppert, Liberal Democrat Party
• Stuart James Tuckwood, Green Party
• Daniel Zeichner, Labour Party

If you wish to vote at these elections and are not already registered to vote, you must do so by the end of Monday 22 May.

If you are a British, Irish or Commonwealth citizen and on the electoral register you will receive a poll card. You do not need a poll card in order to vote but if you have not received one by Monday 15 May please call 01223 457048 to check that you are registered.

You can register online in a few minutes at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote - you will need to provide your National Insurance number.

If you do not have a National Insurance number you can still register but will be asked for further proof of identification. You can also request a paper form by calling 01223 457048 or by email to elections@cambridge.gov.uk.

 

Antoinette Jackson, Acting Returning Officer, said: “A general election is your chance to vote for a Member of Parliament to represent the place where you live, so I would encourage anyone who has not registered to vote to do so before the 22 May deadline.

“Registering to vote is quick and easy, so if you have moved house recently, are a student wishing to vote in Cambridge, or know you are not yet registered I would urge you to do so at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

“If you are already registered to vote but are planning to be away from Cambridge on 8 June, you can apply to vote by post up until 5pm on Tuesday 23 May.

“If you would like to appoint someone else to vote on your behalf you can apply to vote by proxy up until 5pm on Wednesday 31 May. This may be the best option if you are going to be away from Cambridge on 8 June and there is a chance a postal vote would not get to you in time.”
