Littleport station car park gets underway

Work to add an additional 79 parking spaces at Littleport railway station has commenced.

The extra 79 spaces will represent a significant increase on current available parking space and mean that more people can access the main Kings Lynn – London line.  In addition, a further 30 cycle spaces will be installed to meet the demand in commuters choosing to cycle to the station.

East Cambridgeshire District Council (ECDC) has worked alongside local Councillors to finally bring the scheme to fruition. The work will be managed by ECDC’s trading company, with Ingleton Wood as the agent and Brooks and Wood Ltd appointed as the main contractor.

Cllr Bill Hunt, Chair of the ECDC Asset Development Committee commented: “These spaces are much needed and are a significant boost for people who want to use Littleport station to get to work. Alongside the extra spaces which are being built at Ely train station, and coupled with the opening of the new Cambridge North railway station, it means that travelling to work by train for people in our District has become much more viable.”

He added: “We have worked closely with the contractor to ensure that disruption is minimised for users while the work is being undertaken and the current car park will remain open throughout the works.”

David Ambrose-Smith, Chair of the Community Services Committee and District Councillor for Littleport added: “More car parking and cycle spaces being available will have a big impact on Littleport.  The spaces will boost the local economy and make Littleport and the surrounding area a more attractive place to live.”

The Littleport station car parking charges will remain the same.

The spaces are scheduled to be completed before Christmas.
