Eight schools and colleges have sent as many pupils to Oxford or Cambridge over the last three years as three-quarters of all schools.

The Sutton Trust – which campaigns for social mobility – analysed UCAS statistics.

It finds pupils from independent schools are more than twice as likely to go to a top uni than those from comprehensives.

Cambridge University said, "The Sutton Trust raises a number of important points in its report which recognises the complex series of social and cultural issues that come into play when it comes to access to Higher Education.

"The University of Cambridge is constantly striving to increase the number of less advantaged students admitted on to its courses.
