By-election for Bourn ward after district councillor steps down

A by-election will be held to elect a new district councillor for Bourn and surrounding villages after a district councillor stood down.

Mervyn Loynes’ resignation means that a South Cambridgeshire District Council by-election will be held on Thursday 4 May, the same day as elections for Cambridgeshire County Council and the first Mayor of the new Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority.

The Bourn ward covers the villages of Bourn, Cambourne, Caxton, Croxton and Eltisley. Whoever is elected on 4 May will represent the ward for one year, as all South Cambridgeshire District Council seats are up for election in 2018 due to ward boundary changes.

Anyone interested in standing for election is urged to visit www.electoralcommission.org.uk to find out more information and download a nomination form.

Nomination forms must be handed in to the Council’s Cambourne offices between Wednesday 22 March and 4pm on Tuesday 4 April.

Candidates must be aged 18 or over and be British or a citizen of a member country of the European Union or Commonwealth.

They must either be registered to vote in South Cambridgeshire, have either lived or worked in the district for the whole of the last 12 months, or have been the owner or tenant of a home in the district for at least one year.

Nomination papers are also available from South Cambridgeshire District Council’s elections team on elections@scambs.gov.uk or 03450 455 214. Anyone interested in standing for election for a political party must contact the party’s local office directly.

Alex Colyer, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s interim chief executive and returning officer, said: “District councillors work hard to represent the views of their communities. In general, anyone who lives, works or owns property in the district can stand for election. Standing for election is a straightforward process, so if you want to know more, please get in touch as soon as possible.”
