Officers say the current site in Cambridge city centre is outdated.

Parkside police station was built in the 1960s, but officers say it is now beyond its functional age, with an insufficient numbers of cells that are not up to standards expected today.

In April 2022, Cambridgeshire Police acquired land near the Milton Park and Ride.

On Monday 8 January 2024, work began to fence-off and clear the area.

On Wednesday 28 February 2024, Cambridgeshire Police invited Star Radio onto the site as the diggers got to work.

Police and Crime Commissioner Darryl Preston spoke to Star Radio about why the move is happening:

Work has begun with the installation of a new access road and the creation of a car park and a welfare area within the site, as well as installing some of the early drainage and the construction of the foundations.

The removal of vegetation is also taking place before the nesting season starts in March and, having already been surveyed by an ecologist, they will continue to inspect the works as it progresses.

Construction of the new police headquarters should be completed by late 2025.
