New Cambridge science district could create thousands of jobs

Plans include new laboratory buildings and an "urban country park".

A new science district is planned on an old landfill site on Coldhams Lane.

The latest plans for a new “urban innovation district” in the city have been presented to Cambridge City Council ahead of a formal planning application.

The developer, Mission Street, said it hopes to create a “globally significant science destination” that also “fully integrates with its neighbourhood and transforms Cambridge lives”.

It will be made up of three main areas of land, the first will contain the research and development buildings, the second a protected ecology area, and the third, called the lakes, which is planned to be opened up to be able to walk around.

The developer said there were many potential benefits of the new development, including the around 3,800 additional net jobs.

The developer also set out plans for The Mixer community building, where the developer hopes people working in the park will be able to come and socialise.

They said they also planned to open up this building to the wider public as well, explaining that rooms could be booked for groups to use, and referenced the idea of summer theatres and farmer markets being held.

A formal planning application is set to be submitted at the end of the month.
