A10 upgrades between Ely and Cambridge to start in 2026

The aim is to reduce accidents and congestion on the A10.

The government backed the improvements after scrapping the HS2 project.

The A10 between Ely and Cambridge is a single carriageway road that links up to Kings Lynn in the North and London in the South.

It is often extremely busy with public transport, farm traffic, commuters, freight and through-traffic.

Traffic jams, delays and incidents are common on the road, and with 11,000 new homes and 14,000 jobs on the horizon at the former Waterbeach barracks, the road is set to become even busier.

Cambridgeshire County Council says these improvements are an opportunity to address the existing and future challenges.

It will be sharing more information and progress updates on the scheme in the coming months, and a public consultation is in the pipeline.

On the current timetable, if the project is approved at each stage, work is likely to begin in 2026 and be fully completed in 2030.

No date has been set for work to begin on rail junctions in Ely and Haughley, which also got government backing when the HS2 scheme was dropped.
