Make a difference to your city - Volunteer for Cambridge

A ONE day fair at The Guildhall this month will bring together a range of local voluntary organisations to give residents and students an opportunity to learn about volunteering in Cambridge, and how they can get involved to help make a real difference to people’s lives.

Volunteer for Cambridge, hosted by Cambridge City Council and Cambridge Hub, takes place at the Guildhall in Cambridge from 11am-4pm on Saturday 21 October. It will feature a marketplace of 90 local charities, organisations and societies, which work to improve society and the environment through volunteering.

People attending will be able to speak directly to these organisations – working in areas including health, disability, social care, young people, education, culture, sport, the environment, anti-poverty and justice – to discover more about what they do and about the volunteering opportunities available with them.

It is the third annual event, following on from the success of the previous events in 2015 and 2016, which were attended by almost 600 and 900 local residents and students respectively.

Cllr Richard Johnson, Executive Councillor for Communities, said: “If you are interested in volunteering and putting something back in to our local community then Volunteer for Cambridge is for you.

“This event is a great way for students and residents alike to find out more about the vibrant, strong and diverse voluntary and community sector in Cambridge. With nearly 90 different organisations set to attend there is certainly something for everyone.”

Lily Macfadyen Tomson, Manager of Cambridge Hub, said: “We are delighted with the level of enthusiasm for this third Volunteer for Cambridge event, from local residents and students, charities and grassroots groups from across town and gown.

“It’s amazing to see how much interest there is in making an impact on what was recently evaluated as the most unequal city in the country. Young people are excited about developing their skills, and older residents that we speak with are keen to give back to their communities.

“We have also been struck by the shared passion for social inclusion, and breaking down barriers, from everybody who is planning on attending. The event is open to all, no matter your background - see you there!”

Entrance is free and people can just drop in, but if they register to attend in advance via Eventbrite they will be entered into the prize draw to win a £100 Corn Exchange voucher.
