Ely firefighter takes on My75Miles challenge

An on-call firefighter based at Ely Fire Station is taking on a running challenge to raise money for charity.

Duncan Fraser, who also works for Turners (Soham) as an operations administrator, will be running 75 miles over five days, starting on Monday June 25. He is raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity's 'My 75 Miles' challenge. He will also push himself further by running the final 15 miles wearing full firefighter kit and breathing apparatus.

The #My75Miles challenge comes as part of the charity’s 75th anniversary, with people encouraged to compete the 75 miles in any way they can to raise money to help the charity help support members of the fire services community in need.

Duncan said: “After reading about the challenge, I wanted to push myself and do something that hopefully get a lot of people to support me and the charity. As someone who doesn’t really run a lot or enjoy running, especially long distances, I knew this was going to be challenging, but as it has turned out I’ve grown to enjoy running and missed the days when I haven’t been out. I’ve spent lots of time on my own running the streets and countryside, followed by time in the gym.

Duncan is planning to run the same route for the first four days of his challenge (with a rest day on the Thursday), completing a different route for his fifth and final run on Saturday June 30, in his firefighting kit, finishing at Ely Market Square.

He added: “As a firefighter of over five years, I know the great efforts the charity goes to, looking after and being there for us when we need it. It provides a great service and I wanted to try and help raise awareness and funds for the charity that may one day need to be there for me.”
